Advocating for the equality and non-discrimination of LGBTIQ+ personnel in the UN system and its peacekeeping operations

About Us

UN-GLOBE Board members Hyung Nam Hak and Gabe Galaxy and volunteer Jenn Rumbach meet with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres in 2017.

About Us

Founded in 1996, UN-GLOBE is celebrating 30 years of dedication to the equality and non-discrimination of LGBTIQ+ personnel in the UN system and its peacekeeping operations. An all-volunteer association staffed by current UN personnel, UN-GLOBE represents thousands of past and present UN personnel in duty stations around the world through its Board, Duty Station and Entity Coordinators, and volunteers.

Coordinators are at the heart of the UN-GLOBE mission. They not only contribute to high-level discussions about the daily issues faced by LGBTIQ+ personnel - including permanent UN employees, contractors, interns, and others involved in the intricate workings of the UN system, its agencies, funds, and programmes - but also drive conversations about policy reform, workplace needs, and the safety, security and dignity of UN personnel and their dependents. They perform a wide range of functions, from organizing in-person and virtual gatherings and events, to raising key issues to organizational and duty station leadership, to supporting individual staff members with issues ranging from health care access to questions of duty station safety. For more information on UN-GLOBE in your entity or duty station, please contact the relevant Coordinator below. If you are interested in becoming a Coordinator, please contact ohrm_globe@un.org to start a conversation.

The Board acts as a connection point for Coordinators and as an adviser on internal LGBTIQ+ matters across the system by liaising with UN leadership, staff representative bodies, and relevant external entities, organizing global events, ensuring Coordinators are well-equipped and present across the system, initiating dialogue about policy reform, and regularly releasing guidance on critical issues such as mobility, trans-inclusive workplaces, and parental leave. The Board has also been an important partner on a range of initiatives, including the UN enabling environment guidance, marriage reform for UN personnel and the UN Secretariat Strategy on Protection from Violence and Discrimination of LGBTIQ+ Persons. Board elections are held every two years and any current member of UN personnel can run for the Board.

About our name: In 1996, the acronym UN-GLOBE stood for “United Nations Gay Lesbian or Bisexual Employees.” It was fairly common at that time for larger organizations to have "G.L.O.B.E." groups. We have moved on from using the acronym in that way, as we now represent a wide range of individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC), including those who describe themselves using terms within the LGBTIQ+ spectrum and those who use other terms or no terms at all. We continue to use the name “UN-GLOBE” as a nod to our history.
